A unique antique figural carved newel post from the Belle Isle Casino in Detroit, Michigan. We are unsure of the age of this newel, but the casino was built in 1904. Belle Isle was named in 1845, which probably accounts for the date carved on the post. This folk art piece features a face, with leaves for eyes and with a leaf headdress. “Belle Isle Casino†is carved onto one side, with a maple leaf above. The adjoining side is ornamented with playing card symbols. Another side of the newel says “981 Acres,†with playing cards and leaves above, and the final side of the newel features leaves and dice, with the 1845 date and “Scott Fountain†(the fountain was completed in 1925). This one-of-a-kind piece is in good antique condition and measures 7-7/8†wide and 50-1/4†tall.
