Rare and desirable Bird''s-Eye-Maple (strongly figured) five drawer sidelock chest of drawers in the American Eastlake Style, with oak, cherry and various secondary woods, an unusual compact size (32''w.x 20''d.x 43''h.), circa 1880, in excellent condition, with correct solid cast brass Eastlake style replacement drawer pulls. The design was first made popular by arbiter of taste and author, Englishman Charles Eastlake in his book ''Hints on Household Taste'', first published in 1868. It became widely read in America and was reprinted several times. The style remained popular through the end of the 19th c. The style''s clean lines and use of quality materials was a reaction to the then perceived over-designed styles and often poor quaility that preceeded it. It remains fresh and appropriate today.
