Fine English Chippendale Two over Three Drawer Bachelors Chest, c. 1760-80.

It is crafted of solid mahogany, using broad boards to construct the top and sides, each two board construction. An applied molded carved rim wraps around the perimeter of the top. Two smaller drawers rest over three wide graduated drawers, each with entirely original brasses and very early (possibly original) locks, being constructed of oak secondary woods hand dovetailed with a flat bottom beneath applied runners and nailed at the back with original rosehead nails. Each drawer features full length dustboards between each drawer to protect the contents of each drawer from dust and dirt as the drawer moves in and out of the case - it also supports each drawer, allowing for a smooth flowing motion in the case. The chest rests over four large bracket feet, each fully original with original blocking on all but one of the feet. The back is original as well, constructed of four pine boards lined with original hand forged rosehead nails. The secondary pine triangle supporting the back feet dovetails into the feet, making them permanent and also a rather unique detail of design.

This is a remarkably well preserved chest, with originality in almost every facet of the case. It is incredibly dense and heavy, built to last the test of time - attention was shown in every detail of the construction, allowing this chest to survive and thrive two hundred and fifty years later. It is an outstanding acquisition for any collector of English Chippendale furniture and a treasure that will be enjoyed in your home for many generations to come.

Visually Outstanding Condition
Early finish, though not original, under years of later polishing for a deep and warm patina. Speckles to finish, almost like rain drops. Locks appear replaced, but are very old with a key that only operates the top right drawer. Drawers reinforced in a few places, with runners repaired on a few and a mid-bar added for support of the underside of one. Blocking on back left foot replaced - all other blocking original, all feet are original. Front right foot block has fallen out, but has been retained and can be added back with relative ease. All bail pull hardware fully original with later polishing (only to the front half of the hardware). Crack on left side of case, reinforced with a butterfly dovetail from the inside. Bottom drawer with a triangular patch in the middle. All backboards fully original with original rosehead nails.
