This lovely mahogany writing desk is in excellent condition throughout. Although it is not stamped it has all the hallmarks of a fine Gillow of Lancaster piece, and the brass drawer locks are stamped "Hobbs & Co, London, Lever, Machine Made" a locksmith which Gillow's favoured. Some of the brass may not be original, though most appears to be so, The colour of the piece is excellent, and it is constructed of solid mahogany throughout including the drawer linings. This style was popular from the turn of the 18th C., following on from a design in Hepplewhite's The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsters Guide of 1788, and later echoed in desks of the Federal period of the United States
