This rare Victorian walnut cylinder desk c1885 belonged to Connecticut Governor Henry Roberts B 1853 D 1929. Roberts became alderman of Hartford, Connecticut in 1897. He became a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1899. He held that position till 1901. He also was a member of the Connecticut State Senate from 1901 to 1902. He became lieutenant governor of Connecticut in 1903. He held that position till 1905. He became the 44th Governor of Connecticut on January 4, 1905. Provenance supplied to buyer.This desk measures 36 inches wide, 76 inches to top of back, 30 inches to the writing surface and 22.5 inches deep. All original including finish. Even the felt writing surface that retains its surface marks and stains from the Governors constant use is orignial. This desk has the best interior we ever seen in a cylinder desk from this period. It has birdseye maple drawer fronts surrounded by rosewood with rosewood drawer knobs. Fine hand cut dovetailed drawers and frame joints. This stunning piece of American Victorian furniture was with out a doubt a special order, made by one of the important New York cabinet makers on Broad Street.
