A very fine quality Regency period figured rosewood and brass-mounted sofa table, in the manner of William Trotter of Edinburgh.
English or Scottish, circa 1820
The rectangular twin-flap top with rounded corners and beaded edge decoration, the flaps supported on carved scroll tulip decorated swinging end supports, above a pair of frieze drawers with opposing faux drawers, on a central tapering column support with an ornate gilt brass collar, above the concave-sided quarter form base with over-scrolled foliage-carved and paterae-mounted sabre legs, terminating in original hairy paw-shaped brass capping and castors.
Notably, the top is veneered in finely figured rosewood without sapwood, which points out to an expensive piece.
The piece's elegant design and decorative features echo the style of William Trotter of Edinburgh, who rivalled the London furniture makers of the day and supplied very fine pieces to prominent Scottish households. Exquisite craftsmanship, smart choice of veneers and the use of the finely engraved brass mounts and caster capping suggest that the piece was made by a highly skilled cabinetmaker, for a wealthy person with sophisticated taste.
