Circa 1890. Exceptional, Late Victorian carved oak arm chair. We do not usually buy oak but this chair is such high quality, so beautifully carved and in such superb condition we could not resist. Solid quarter-sawn (tiger) oak, with a center frieze in the hand carved back splat of a gargoyle surrounded by leaves, nuts and other flourishes. The fine curved arms end in deeply carved fantasy creatures. The back turned spindles have a "beehive" design as does the top finials, legs and stretcher. This wonderful chairs last detail is round ball finials beneath the seat. This turn of the century American masterpiece is a rich golden oak in very fine original condition that we have lightly re-polished. Signed on the bottom "Heywood Bros" which became Heywood Wakefield in 1897. Sturdy and comfortable with no breaks or repairs. 45 " tall x 27"wide x 25" deep. Price 895.
