An American Federal Hitchcock Cane Seated Chair C. 1826-1843
A black painted and yellow ochre stenciled, cane seated “Hitchcock†style Federal period chair. Paint appears to be original, as much wear has occurred over the years. The seat has been re-caned and is in wonderful shape.
• The turned and reeded top crest rail has the distinctive Hitchcock pillow or bolster shape in the center.
• The wide, curving center slat of the back has a plain yellow ochre rectangular stencil on the front, it has been grain-painted on the rear. The front of the slat is slightly clouded.
• The back is flaired; the stiles descending straightly from the flair to form the rear legs.
• The rounded stiles are flattened on the front.
• The legs and front stretcher are turned and reeded. The front legs are wonderfully bulbous.
• The legs terminate in button feet.
• The crest rail height is 34 1/4†from the floor.
• The seat sits 18†from the floor.
• The seat is 17 1/8†wide at the front, narrowing to 14 1/4†wide at the rear.
• The seat depth is 14 ½â€.
• The crest rail width at the top is 16 ½â€.
• There is a vintage screw repair to the right rear facing crest rail joint.
This chair is in as found condition. The surface patina is nicked, worn and flaked, as expected in a chair approaching 180 years of age. There are a few faint splotches of white paint here and there. The chair is in reasonably sturdy shape for this delicate style of chair.
