A 'High-End' Piece of the Period. A Victorian reproduction of a French Gothic Settle (bench with hinged box-seat chest)popular in the mid-to-late 1800s.
The back is high relief hand carved panels and the overall style is very desirable. The back panels (LH & RH) have a nude lady holding a goblet surrounded with a period foliage and a unique 'man's face' exposed in the foliage with two (2) falcons at the bottom.
The center back panels have a whimsical half man half foliage being surrounding a center oval portrait of a king & queen.
The four (4) lower front panels have foliage around a hand carved head of a king, queen, prince, and princess.
The hinged box-seat is surmounted by armrests with complete carving lion setting on its back legs holding a shields with three (3) fluer-de-lys.
The finish does appear to be original to the piece and is likely a French polish or shellac. A truly one-of-a-kind piece.
