Historical Context: This coin was minted in Velia. Velia is unlike many Greek cities in italy . Velia was never captured by the Lucanians and in 275 BC became a Roman ally. Velia was located on Western coast of Lucania . This area during the 5th and 4th Centuries BC produced some of the finest ancient coins ever produced.
