Historical Context: This coin was minted by the MACEDONIAN Empire during the reign of Antigonus Gonatus, 277 to 239 BC. The Macedonian empire was founded by Alexander I but carried forward by others including Demetrios Poliorketes, the "Besieger" along with his father Antigonos Monopthalmos. Demetrios won an important victory over Ptolemy I in 306 BC. Antigonus Gonatus was the son of Demetrios. He regained the throne following an interregnum of 11 years.
