Historical Context: These coins were minted in MARONEIA (Thrace) between 400-350 BC. This area was named after Maron, a priest of Apollo, who was featured in the Odyssey by Homer the Poet. Maroneia was noted for its fine quality wine. Thrace was a kingdom that was later founded by Lysimachos, 323-281 BC, who expanded its rule over much of Asia minor following the defeat of Antigonos the One-eyed. These coins predate that period.
