Historical Context: Thasos was a Thracian Island in Northern Greece. It was a rich and fertile island with prolific gold and silver mines. The area was settled by Greek colonist during the 7th century BC. The Greek cultural centered around Aigai, but was of no great importance until the reign of Alexander I (495-454 BC). Philip II (Father of Alexander the Great) initiated the dynamic expansion setting the stage for Alexander.
