Historical Context: This coin was minted in Ephesos about the 2nd to 1st Century BC. Ephesos was situated at the mouth of the Kayster river. Ephesos was founded by IONIAN colonists under Androklos. It rose to a place of great importance in Classical times and Hellenistic times, due in part to its beautififul sanctuary of the Ephesian Artemis. After the end of the Pergamene Kingdom in 133 BC, then fell under Roman rule.
