Reign of Claudius Gothicus. Historical Context: M. Aurelius Claudius (Claudius Gothicus) became one of the leading generals under Valerian and Gallienus. On the assassination of the latter, he was proclaimed emperor. In 269 he marched against a large army of Goths. His army was hopelessly outnumbered but he won a brilliant victory.
