Very Fine French Empire Gilt Bronze Figural Mantel Clock
Original Antique, Paris, France c. 1815
Item # 120202TUW24
This listing is for a Fine French Empire Gilt Ormolu Figural Mantel Clock c. 1815. It makes quite a statement at 17 1/2" high, appropriately petite while having significant presence. The subject is beautiful, featuring a classical figure lounging on a French Empire period récamier with a soft fabric draped over the crest, resting deeply in a thick cushion as she turns her head high to enjoy the hanging bunch of grapes. She is much adorned, with a vine-and-leaf design around her head, each arm with thin gold bands and a thin slinky dress falling across her body.
The sofa is simply a work of art, attention shown to even the smallest details - for example, the mattress she rests on folds and crinkles with such realism you almost want to touch it. The sleigh-form curls at the top beneath the draped cloth, beneath the crest of which is a Cupid with tiny wings peaking over the shoulders, a flowing ribbon making up a halo over his head before curling around his shoulders and into his hands. A dog sits faithfully to the left, while on his right side he holds a bow, the strung entangled around the device. Three small stars finish the design along the top. The sofa apron is a wide border of leaf-vine-berry and floral motifs, mirroring the Rococo spirit of her relaxed demeanor. It rests over Griffin legs, cabriole and joining the frame with curled returns - the details, again, absolutely stunning down to the tiny claws that protrude from each toe.
The center of the sofa is the clock face, gilt through the center with an incredible and complex design in the gilt bordered by a silvered Roman Numeral gallery (over-painted rather poorly), completed by a gilt border made up of a complicated array of arches. The back of the clock is naturally exposed, showing a stamped works with "C 390", mirrored on the back of the hand forged pendulum "390". The entire clock rests over a square base, highlighted at the center with a wonderful design of floral and foliate flowing over rods topped with acorn-form heads, the rods flanking a collection of musical wind instruments. The base rests over acanthus-inspired feet.
Every aspect of this clock is executed with precision and mastery of the details. Each casting is perfect, stunning, minute in detail - her form is perfect, proportions flawless and the overall aesthetic is above reproach. This is a clock for serious collectors of French Empire antiques, a rare find in this condition and is an investment grade work of art.
Measurements: 14" wide x 4 3/4" deep x 17 1/2" high
Condition Report:
Visually Outstanding Condition
Oxidization and tarnishing to the gilt ormolu, more notable to the base where rubbing and dirtiness is a bit more apparent. Wear to the clock face, the Roman Numerals being poorly in-painted with black. No keys available to wind the clock. Minor scratches and wear as would be expected. We have not tested the clock for functionality or attempted to wind it - this is best left to an expert.
