Superb antique French clock circa 1800. The clock is gilt bronze and depicts a seated nude gladiator holding his sword wearing his helmet with a cloak modestly draped over his leg. The base of the clock has beautiful high relief sculptress depicting wreaths and another high relief gladiator head within an intricate design. The clock has its original gold and silvered dial with black Roman numerals and black markers. The clock face is signed BERNARD & FILS A BORDEAUX. The clock has its original pendulum and a replacement key. As all French clocks of this period it strike on the 1/2 hour and the number of hours on the hour. The seated male gladiator is beautifully sculptured. Whoever created this sculpture had remarkable knowledge of human anatomy to create such a beautiful sculpture. The sculpture is further decorated with the gladiator's shield and spears resting against the clock. This is a superb clock in excellent condition as good as you could possibly hope to find one of this age. It is very high quality showing great detail including the beveling of the glass protecting the clock face. The clock measures 19 inches high, 12-3/8 inches wide and 5 inches deep. The gladiator measures from tip of his toe to top of helmet more than 1 foot. Guaranteed to please the most particular collector or connoisseur. (Item #72745)
