The use of costly silver and the slender sculptural purity of its lines suggest that this was a ceremonial weapon rather than a functional one. What does the mind see when we look upon the graceful yet efficient lines of this powerful weapon? The heat of ancient battles? Dark rituals done to honor long forgotten gods? It touches a chord somewhere deep within us, emotions as old as the earth, that even the best of us cannot always deny. Perhaps we should not try to, and instead admire this axe as a work of art, made beautiful and harmless by time. - (FZ.075)Origin: Kfar Malek, Palestine Circa: 2100 BC to 1600 BC Dimensions: 6" (15.2cm) high x 5.5" (14.0cm) wide Catalogue: V1 Collection: Biblical Style: Bronze Age Medium: Bronze « Less

Possessing a precise, sculptural beauty, this splendid and usually large axe head must have once belonged to a great warrior. Though time has blunted its elegant blade somewhat, it has not softened its awesome energy. There is no question that this axe has an exciting history--a past full of adventure--but we should perhaps be grateful that the details have been lost to the centuries. - (FZ.079)Origin: Beit Ulla, Israel Circa: 2100 BC to 1600 BC Dimensions: 5.75" (14.6cm) high x 5.75" (14.6cm) wide Catalogue: V1 Collection: Biblical Antiquities Style: Bronze Age Medium: Bronze « Less

For the lover of antiquities, the term bronze carries a number of meanings. In the 19th century, a Danish museum employee decided to organize the museum's collection by dividing the artifacts into time periods based on man's changing tool types. Thus, the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age have come to represent three distinct time periods in man's technological and cultural history. When man discovered that by alloying tin with copper he could create a material substance much stronger than copper, the resulting bronze technology changed many aspects of his culture. One monumental change was in the weaponry, fine examples represented here in this splendid dagger, powerful axe head and arrowheads. Expert craftsmanship combine with an aesthetic eye to create weapons that are lifted into the realm of art. Their dynamic power and spirited essence can be seen and felt through their exquisite design and tactile surfaces. These sculptural weapons touch a chord deeply buried but never forgotten, common to all mankind. - (PF.6291)Origin: Israel Circa: 1200 BC to 900 BC Dimensions: 19" (48.3cm) wide Collection: Biblical Style: Iron Age Medium: Bronze

The creation of tools utilizing the natural environment is what distinguishes man from animal. What was once created using stone and wood has, over the centuries, evolved into metalworking and modern-day plastics. But it is the simplest tools, those carved from stone, which allowed mankind to conquer the natural environment and to prosper. Holding this flint axe head in our hand, although it appears rough and crude, we are holding the nascent breath of the great civilization of Egypt. From such axe heads would eventually rise the pyramids. Tools allowed mankind to altar the natural settings and to create his own habitats. An axe head like this one, when tied securely to a wooden shaft, could be used to chop wood or to carve meat from a fallen prey. This axe head represents the innate human drive to altar the environment, to innovate, and to create something stronger and more durable. It is in these earliest tools that we are able to witness the birth of civilization. From such tools, mankind learned to carve stones and rocks into new shapes and forms that suited the needs of the people, slowly evolving from primitive axe heads into pyramids and temples. - (PF.5969) « Less
