Howard Carter discovered and excavated the tomb of Egyptian pharaoh King Tutankhamen. Carter got his start as an artist, tracing Egyptian hieroglyphics for others, before becoming an archaeologist himself. His search for the tomb of King Tut took nearly a decade, including a lengthy interruption during World War I, and was supported financially by George Herbert, the earl of Carnarvon. Carter discovered the tomb of Tut on 4 November 1922 and opened the tomb after Lord Carnarvon's arrival at the site on the 26th of November. Ironically, Tutankhamen had been practically unknown before the discovery, but news coverage of Carter's amazing find made "King Tut" a household name. Lord Carnarvon died of pneumonia in 1923, reinforcing the legend of a curse placed on those who had disturbed Tut's tomb. However, Carter himself lived to the age of 64 before dying a natural death in England.   « Less

The painting is titled "Moose and Mate, 1907" which was written in pencil on the back of the original gilt frame in the hand of the artist. Image five shows the signature of Rugnius which matches the signature on the painting. Rungius paintings have sold upwards of $500,000 at auction. While this is not on the grand scale of those paintings, it is a beauty in its own right and is a good buy at this price level. This painting was offered in the May, 2006 Heritage Auction Galleries sale with an estimate of $50,000-70,000.Carl Rungius (1869�1959)Born and formally trained in Germany, Carl Rungius became one of the most noted painters of wildlife scenes in America. He often painted in plain air and his eperience as a big game hunter augmented his understanding of wildlife subject matter. Influenced by the styles of German Romanticism and Realism as a student, Rungius arrived in New York in 1894 and made his first trip West in the following year. He was a member of the National Academy of Design in New York, but spent most of his career traveling throughout the West and Northwest, ultimately settling in Banff, Alberta. This painting, which is in ecellent original condition, is characteristic of Rungius's depictions of big-game animals in impressive landscape settings.   « Less

For sale is a wonderful oil on board painting of a flock of sheep with storm approaching. Approximately 8" x 5" WITHOUT the frame and 9 1/4" x 12 1/2" WITH the frame which is new and in good condition. Signed lower right F.Brissot. This picture shows a flock of sheep in the foreground with a storm approaching. There are houses in the distance and a wagon in the right rear. Felix Saturnin Brissot de Warville was French 1818-1892. Born Sens (Yonne); He was an animal painter. Pupil of Cogniet. Meda 2nd class , 1892. Works: In the Plain, The Thicket (1881); Sheep in Meadow (1882); Flock of Sheep, Leaving the Park(1883); Sheep at Rest, The Return (1884); Interior of Sheepfold, Return of the Flock (1885) He is listed in Benezit.
