Unusual japanese bronze flower vase, signed with the original kiri (paulownia wood) tomobako box. On the lid of the box is the kanji 'Sentoku Tsubogata Hanaire' meaning the design is like a japanese tsubo or tea storage jar and smoked straw was used at the end of firing to achieve the rich colored markings and patina. The vase is a 'hanaire' meaning a flower vase. Exceptional Yoshitora original woodblock scroll dated feb. 1866. Yoshitora's real name was Tatsugoro Nagashima and he was a pupil of Kuniyoshi. This woodblock scroll with vivid detail and color is of an 'oiran' the queen of the Geishas. This style of woodblock scroll is called 'Takenaga Hosho' indicating the long length of the woodblock and in this field the narrow width is called 'habahiro hashira-e' (pillar style). Unusual bamboo flower basket from the Tohoku region of northern Japan. The age is early Taisho Period c.1915. The weave is a wonderful 'yotsume-ami' or same length warp and weft with a rich patina. The rim is a 'makibuchi' weave with superb technique. But what makes this basket so alluring are the wide bamboo iserts on the base. Found in an old country house kura or family treasue store house. The father was a kyogen actor, and otafuku is also known as the character 'oto' in the comic kyogen plays. Most Japanese know 'Otafuku' as the bringer of good luck and happiness. The kanji letters mean big happiness. The mask is carved out of japanese cypress and the finish is made from gofun, crushed oyster shell and rice paste which creates a lovely patina. the age is obvious and in immaculate condition. Rare Japanese lacquered letter box with beautiful raised maki-e maple trees, river and mountains. The scene is from the 'hyaku isshu' the classic 101 ancient great poems. The poem referred to in this poem is by the venerated Ariwara no Narihara. In the upper right hand corner of the box is the kanji with the first line of the poem, "Chihaya Furu Kamiyo" The river in the lower right hand corner has the last line of the poem, "Kuguru To Wa". Basically the poem says that in the ancient mystical age when only gods lived, to see the Tatsuta River dyed crimson red with maple leaves in a shibori pattern was something even the gods themselves could never see. The makie is executed perfectly with stunning maple leaves and a red flow of the imagination in the middle. A collector's piece. $1200. (h:44cm x w:34cm x d:13cm).
