Believed to be France. Late 19th - early 20th century This pair of beautiful porcelain table lamps is handpainted with both floral motifs and an intricate coat of arms design. Under the coat of arms -- which features an armor-mounted shield held by a gryphon on either side -- is a banner with the word "Sperabo", Latin for "I shall hope". Among the painted designs can be seen a white-on-white raised slip design, all over a gilded brass base. The height measurement includes the brass riser and sockets.   « Less

USA Early 1950s This beautiful turned wood lamp was acquired from the Pacific Heights (San Francisco) estate of Paul "Red" Fay, prominent businessman, social figure, and Undersecretary of the Navy in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. It features a double row of brass chain and cast brass fittings over an ebonized base on brass feet. The height measurement is to the top of the brass shaft.   « Less

France 19th century These beautiful lamps are identical in all but two respects: the shape of the fitting where the "candle" meets the brass, and the hand-painting on the tole shades. Described very succinctly by design blogger Jennifer Boles, "Bouillotte lamps originated in late 18th c./ early 19th c. France for use during games of bouillotte, which was similar to modern Poker. Bouillotte lamps traditionally have dish type bases which were used to hold the game chips. Attached to the base is a shaft which holds two to four candleholders as well as a metal shade. At the top of the shaft is a screw type key, which allows one to move the shade down as the candles melt down. The idea was to avoid any type of glare in the eyes of the bouillotte players. Of course, if you have an electrified version, you won't need to move the shade, but the design is the same. What also makes this lamp so distinctive is the tole lampshade." This pair of lamps features a dolphin motif in heavy brass, in both the supports of the electrified "candles", and in the finials, which also incorporate a feathered arrow-shaft motif on the turnscrew.   « Less

USA Early 1920s This beautiful starboard-side lantern was made by Perkins Marine Lamp. Inc., which was formed in 1916. The "Perko" trademark was instituted in 1922, and it is believed that this lantern dates to that period. For nearly 100 years, Perko has had a well-deserved reputation for producing high-quality marine lanterns, chart cases, signaling devices, etc. This lantern, made of heavy-gauge brass, copper, and galvanized sheet metal, was hand-formed and soldered; the close-up shots show both the solidity and the craftsmanship of the piece. It bears a glass lens of deep green glass, denoting that it was displayed on the starboard side of the ship. This stunning, masculine lantern-- which will easily accept an electric fixture -- can be hung, wall-mounted using the original integral bracket, or displayed on a table top. Or track down its port-side mate and put them to use on your yacht!   « Less
