For sale I have a wonderful piece of Art Pottery made by The Hampshire Pottery Company of Keene, NH. The item is called a "Tankard" or "Stein" and it is done in Hampshire Pottery's most famous Matte Cucumber Green Mottled Glaze. The Tankard stands 5 7/8" tall and is 4 3/4" wide outside handle measurement. The piece is 3 5/8" in diameter at the foot. The Stein displays one of the Richest Matt Cucumber Glazes I have seen in quite awhile. It has a Grueby like frothiness to the Glaze. The Style of the Tankard is very much Arts and Crafts. You have a Raised Ring at the top in which the Handle swings out from and attached to the lower body. The handle where it attaches to the lower body has a Buttress appearance and give this piece the added strength in this area that it needs. The lower part of the Tankard also has raised concentric rising from the bottom. when you turn the piece over you can see how thick and Gloopy this glaze really is. The Stein is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. In fact this is one of the cleanest Steins I have ever owned. It appears to have never been used and spent most of its life in a Cabinet. The piece is signed on the Bottom with the Impressed Block Letter "Hampshire" mark in a straight line. I firmly believe this to be a later mark when George Morton from Grueby Pottery owned it. The M in a circle mark can be dated 1904-1914. The JST Keene Mark from 1892-1903 which is the earliest of the Hampshire marks. The pottery closed after Cadmon Robertson's death and reopened again in 1916. They produced Art Pottery until 1917 and then they focused on Dinnerware for Hotels and Restaurants along with Souvenirs until 1923 when Hampshire Pottery Closed permanently. Hampshire started producing Matte Glazes in 1891. This was 7 years earlier than their main Competitor Grueby Faience of Boston, Mass. Hampshire Pottery resembles the style of Grueby but were much more affordable as they were mold made pieces as opposed to hand thrown. This will make a wonderful addition to any matte Pottery collection of Art Pottery and would look great on that Mission Arts and Crafts Bookcase.   « Less

From one of my favorite childhood stories, Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland", I present the infamous Red Queen.This whimsical character jug, designed by William K. Harper, was issued from 1990 to 1991, and was the first of the Alice In Wonderland series.In excellent condition and measuring 4 1/2" at the peak of her crown, the Red Queen is hallmarked as shown and bears the Doulton Number D6859. This is a rare early 18th Century Chinese export porcelain egg shell translucent yung cheng tea cup with matching saucer in rose mandarin palette rendered in traditional court style. There are five subjects in a courtyard setting with living space and a landscape scene in the background. Delicate four quadrant incre bird and branch interior border scenes which render the outside of the saucer. Circa: 1720-1725.
