This is a great, early crackleware rabbit plate by the Chelsea Pottery, later known as Dedham Pottery in Mass. The images are raised and expertly painted on the sharply beveled rim of the plate. The crackling is fine. The back bears the impressed clover leaf mark for Chelsea Pottery, which was discontinued in 1894. The condition is great, with a tiny bit of roughness on one part of the edge. The back still bears the original paper label. There is a tight hairline at the border and a few small flakes on the edges. This red faience clay tile was made by the Rossman Company, in operation between 1907 and 1930. The deeply molded design depicts a pilgrim kneeling with his musket and his fresh catch of a turkey. The molding is fine on this old American Arts and Crafts tile. It is in unglazed red clay, allowing every detail to be seen clearly. Tiles by the Rossman Company are always hard to find, and this is the only time I have seen this image. An impressed ''R'' is on the back as well as the numbers 4600. Based in Trenton New Jersey, the Mueller Mosaic Company was known for it''s fabulous arts and crafts tiles. They do not surface often, and they are one of my personal favorites. One side of this tile is adorned with the American Flag, the other the Union Jack. A crown sits atop the sheild. The glazes are curdled and mottled. It is a terrific piece, and I have never seen another like it. Chances are there aren''t many out there. The back is unmarked, as is most of this company''s work. It has deep grooves incised and a factory cut hole for hanging. There is one shallow flake to the right edge.
