This stunning antique Khorassan maintains that grand tradition, dividing the field into compartments of similar shape set off from one another by color and varying ornament. One series is all in red, functioning as a kind of ground with fine floral elements as fillers. The others alternate in apricot and green with diamonds and vines as fillers. A lovely vinescroll with sickle leaves on an apricot ground plays off against the color and ornament of the field compartments. A grand, fan-like oval medallion surrounded by a floral garland dominates the field. At its center is a smaller medallion of lotus flowers with a laurel wreath at its center. A spare array of flowers floats amidst the open aubergine ground, with entwined figure-eight grapevines in horizontal panels at either end of the rug.
