A very Art and Crafts image, the swirling sculpted leaves of the thistle plant surround four blossoms. This tile is highly dimensional where the matte glazes range from green to blue. I have seen this tile in a 4 inch version, but never have I seen another in this large eight inch size. It''s very impressive. The condition is very good. Harris Strong is best known for his mid century tile panels, but he also made pottery, albeit for a short time and early in his career. The masked sgraffito stick man on this bowl can also be found on some of Strong''s earliest tiles, usually double framed with a wide linen mat and a rectangular paper label on the back. The boomerang shaped bowl undulates from a low 1 3/4 inches at the base of his foot to a high point of 2 7/8 inches at the top of his head. The figure lies across the matte aqua colored background decorated by an incised black line with raised white enamel accents. A bird is perched on his raised knee. The bowl is 14 inches wide ad nearly 7 inches in depth/ The exterior is covered in a glossy black glaze. The base is marked with an incised C-40 The condition remains excellent with gentle crazing, perhaps purposeful, to the aqua interior. There are no chips, cracks, or restorations.
