Handsome standing male incensario. Highly burnished grey-black ceramic. Strong profile facial features wearing disc ear ornaments and high karat nose ring. Incised motifs of tattooing across jaw line shows the high rank and identity to this individual. Arms held to his sides. Large shallow platter type headdress with light burnished patterns on underside. Reassembled and visible restoration over breaks to meet museum criteria. Late Classic circa 1175 to 1521 AD the TECPATLIXQUAHUA was used in Aztec human sacrificial rites. In an early period of time the blade was used without a handle, however, as time progressed, in the late period of Aztec culture they were mounted in elaborated handles; as you can see in the movie Apocalypto. For similar Aztec Knife blades at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City museum collection. CONDITION: In good condition showing its age and usage, minor chip to the point with age patina, the calcified mineral deposits, strongly visible on the surface of the blade, are strong and excellent indicators of the authenticity of this piece. This item has been SOLD. A female votive figure from the Jamma Coaque people of Ecuador,characterized by her wide turban and voluptuous figure. Standing with hands joined, holding a small staff or scroll. There are remnants of burnished pigment over a tan/gray clay, but little identifiable decoration remains. The right shoulder has been repaired and other cracks at the neck have also been filled by a former owner. An attractive piece, nicely restored. Not frequently encountered.
