Rare decoration and form! From ancient Greece, Southern Italy, Daunia, ca. 6th - 4th BC. Terracotta horn-handled kyathos / wine ladle with geometric decorations; round shallow bowl with painted thick / thin bands encircling; topped by a two horned strap handle with a stylised head between resembling an owl, then another set of eyes and a fineline diamond design further down front of handle. Concentric circles around inner bowl with a painted star with twin/opposing birds (ibis perhaps?)in center (similar decoration appears on exterior). Hand-thrown and painted. 6-1/2"H x 6"D, re-glued handle, two areas of rim restoration plus minor chipping, else quite nice. From the Greek colony of Apulia in Southern Italy, ca. 350 AD. A black glazed pottery vessel with bulbous, rounded body, circular foot, long handle and vertical round spout with flat, ridged mouth. The piece has been finished with stamped center, depicting the goddess Athena, shown wearing her Corinthian styled helmet high on her head, long locks of hair flowing beneath. Painted with a large 'X' in red on base, which would have been a maker's mark. Larger than most, standing at 6-1/2"H, intact/generally excellent condition. From ancient Greece, Attica, dating circa 545 - 530 BC. A tall, graceful footed pottery vessel with marvelous painted scenes. On Side A an ithyphallic satyr grabs a deer from behind with both hands, while Side B shows a satyr copulating with a deer. There are other cups by the Oakeshott Painter in museums around the world: Boston, Museum of Fine Arts (69.1052); Cyrene, Museum (409.13); Frankfurt, Liebieghaus (528); Kurashiki Ninagawa Museum, Japan (25); New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art (17.230.5); Oxford, Ashmolean Museum (1966.941; 1972.162, the name-piece for the painter); Samos, Vathy Museum (K2599; K6791; K6925); see also the Beazley Archive. An especially interesting parallel for our cup, created by the same painter, can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, where an ithyphallic satyr is approaching a mule from behind with sexual intentions. Even closer is a skyphos in Athens, where a deer is sexually assaulted by a satyr.The Oakeshott painter (formerly known as the Painter of the New York Band Cup) received his name from Beazley, who renamed him in honour of Sir Walter and his wife Noel Oakeshott, when they donated a cup by the painter to the Ashmolean Museum Oxford; this cup (inv. nr. 1972.162) has become the name-piece of the painter. The Oakeshott painter (formerly known as the Painter of the New York Band Cup) received his name from Beazley, who renamed him in honor of Sir Walter and his wife Noel Oakeshott, when they donated a cup by the painter to the Ashmolean Museum Oxford; this cup (inv. nr. 1972.162) has become the name-piece of the painter. Published: Galerie Nefer 8 (1990), 13 no. 9; mentioned in Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum Athens 4, 35 as a parallel to skyphos 22833 (pl. 23, 3-4). Black-glazed pottery jug done in red-figure, with concave neck pinched to form a broad shallow frontal lobe and two small side-lobes (creating a trefoil, allowing liquid to be poured in any of three directions); front features the profile head of a Lady of Fashion wearing white, pearl-like earrings, her hair dressed in a kekryphalos with a radiate stephane. 4-1/8"H (10.5 cm), repair to lip, minor rim chips, minor glaze loss, as shown.
