Concert 8 Model upright piano by C. Bechstein, Berlin, Germany. Serial No. 187433. Beautiful rosewood, with burl. Dimensions: 131 cms. ht. x 154 cms. width x 62 cms. depth. Purchased in 2002 (manufactured in 2000). Condition: wonderful playing condition, with a beautiful tone; chip to the block beneath the lowest E key of the keyboard (see photos), and some minor blemishes on the left end. This piano is an excellent value, priced at about a third of the new retail price. The Bechstein Concert 8 is a classic among concert pianos and has received several first prizes by the jury of "Le Monde de la Musique." To quote their opinion: "The Concert 8 piano has proven itself a piano of the highest rank. Its tonal projection enables a great spectrum of harmonic resonance, with a truly great, beautiful, natural tone of duration. An incomparable richness of color! The Concert 8 approaches absolute perfection piano sonority. It is well suited to the interpretation of contrasting styles of music. The tonal balance is so close to that of a grand piano that the only question remaining is whether one need buy a grand piano at all! For many, it has long been the best upright piano in the world." C. Bechstein was established in 1853 by Carl Bechstein. In 1857, Hans von Bulow (Liszt's son-in-law) gave the first public performance on a Bechstein grand piano by performing Liszt's 'Piano Sonata in B Minor' in Berlin. By 1881, Bechstein was supplying pianos to Queen Victoria for Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. Between 1901-1914, Bechstein was the largest dealership in London, supplying pianos to the Tsars of Russia and to the royal families of Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Austria and Denmark.
