Beautiful antique bronze sculpture of David standing on the head of Goliath with his sword in hand after slaying and beheading the fierce giant Goliath. The bronze is inscribed A. Mercie (Antonin Mercie 1795-1875). Antonin Mercie was the creator of Gloria Victis one of the most sought after 19th century sculptures. The last model of Gloria Victis sold at auction for $33,600.00. Gloria Victis and David Vainqueur are his two most famous and sought after compositions created by this sculptor in the 19th century. He made David in various sizes. The model we have is the 29 inch size. Diameter at base 6-1/2 inches. Widest width from sword handle to his elbow 18 inches. Weight 29 lbs. It is signed A. Mercie and also inscribed Barbedienne Foundry. The 36 inch version last sold two years ago for a little more than $15,000.00 at auction in France. The model that we have was last sold at auction in 2005 at Christie's London February 24, 2005 lot #8. It realized $10,305.00.
