Modern abstract marble sculpture by Masami Kodama. The sculpture is unsigned. Marble is notoriously unforgiving; sculpting and polishing the stone to form a smoothly polished shape incorporating both rounded and geometric elements requires great skill. Masami Kodama is regarded as a master of marble carving. He was born in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1933. He majored in sculpture at Kyoto University, and graduared with a Master's Degree in 1958. He came to the US in 1964 to teach at the Brooklyn Museum Art School. His work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as in many others, and in public, corporate, and private collections throughout the world.
