Antique, 16th -17th century, Polish or Hungarian horseman, War Hammer – Nadziak - Csakany , the iron head formed with a slender conical hammer and down-curved, tapering, beak-shaped rear-fluke, mounted on its wooden haft.
The wooden haft near the iron head has a band of its original, very dry leather; it is possible that the entire haft at some point was covered in leather, or, this is a part of the leather loop for suspending the hammer from the saddle.
MEASUREMENTS: Overall length; 65.8cm (25 7/8 in), length of the head; 13.7 cm (5 3/8 in).
CONDITION: In good condition considering its age, showing the age and usage. Free of any repairs or restoration.
Since the Hungarian and Polish war hammers are very similar, and in some cases are almost the same, we do not want to state that the item is, in fact, a distinguished Hungarian or Polish.
This rare War Hammer is part of an old Canadian collection of antique Arms and Armour which we had acquired recently, including some Eastern European war hammers, axes, armors, helmets and other weapons. Some of these unique items are already posted for sale, and others are in the process of cataloging, and will be posted for sale soon.
