An 1850-1870 period German dagger with an attractive antler hilt and well crafted flamboyant blade. The antler hilt suggests a classic German hunting dagger, yet the flamboyant hilt and pommel suggest a sidearm, or perhaps both. The hilt is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks in the antler. The metal pommel cap has darkened with age and the metal cap in the grip area and the bottom ferrule retain much of the original blue. The brass cross guard is sound and shows traces of some former owners efforts to tighten it with soft metal. The blade is in good condition with some areas of light rust and staining. Comes with a leather scabbard which has age but is not original to the dagger, it is very dry and shows much use, with the upper portion of the seam splitting. It appears to have been hand sewn. Blade 7", Hilt 5.25" Overall 12.5"
