Antique sterling silver, partially gilded claret jug. Made Birmingham, England 1876. Measures 13 1/2 inches high. Weighs 930 grams. Baluster shaped body on a round, pedestal base. Bands of stylised buds/folliage around base and shoulder. Fan-shaped fluting radiates around the lower slopes. A wide band of relief sculpted Greek mythological figures surrounds the circumference at the widest part. Scenes of warriors, athletes, woman and children. The handle is a series of scrolling acanthus leaves with beautiful detail, ending in an acorn near the lid. The hinged lid and inner part of the neck are gilded. Hallmarks:The full series of hallmarks is found about an inch from the top of the handle. Hallmarks are also inside the lid and under the base. Marks are: makers mark FE; Queen Victoria''s head in profile facing left; lion passant; anchor for Birmingham; date letter ''b''. There is also an engraved Elkington & Co on the base.
