A classic original 19th Century Bentwood Rocker with correct hand caning which is in excellent condition, it is made of steamed Beech Wood. 20" W. X 43" H. X 41" D. While there are numerous modern copies, the originals are easily identified by there superior proportions and delicate lines. The style and technique were introduced in the Mid-nineteenth Century in Austria and credit is usually given to an inventor and designer named Thonet. There is some controversy however over who was really the first to introduce Bentwood furniture. Two brothers named Kohn (J. & J. Kohn) introduced their bentwood furniture at the same time as Thonet. The popularity of the furniture was immense due to its strength, ease of shipping and reasonable cost, (the pieces where shipped world wide, unassembled and then assembled upon arrival). This example is guaranteed to be original though a manufacturer's label is not present. Some Bentwood furniture had paper labels attached to the bottom and often they have fallen off.
