This is a very handsome hoopback example crafted with utmost precision featuring carved bamboo stiles. The steam bent hickory crest rail is perfectly formed, bombe before concaving in to tenon through the plank seat. The seven maple spindles are graduated, very carefully and precisely carved to swell at each joint where a thin channel highlights the joint to resemble a shoot of bamboo. These tenon through the crest rail, many actually peeking over the rail now from years of shrinking and expanding. The seat has wonderful form, being softly scooped out and shaped, a shallow channel framing the gallery of spindles along the back. The four legs tenon into, but not through, the seat surface, leaving it undisturbed by anything but the deep and wonderful pitting and oxidization that has become it's patina. Deep in the grooves and cracks, small remnants of the original green paint add to this, leaving a piece of it's history behind. The underside of the seat has more of this dark milk paint, mingled amongst the nearly black oxidization and staining throughout. The maple legs mirror the spindles, though with much embellishment, swelling sharply at each joint and tapering down at the feet. Maple has the wonderful distinction of being crisp and tight when carved, the reason why it is used in most windsor legs - on the bamboo design, this becomes particularly attractive. An H-form stretcher locks the legs in perfect balance.
This is a very fine hoopback windsor, an excellent selection for anyone passionate about this form. Crafted in the height of the period, with the remnants of it's original color and undisturbed construction, this is a chair you will cherish and enjoy. If well cared for, this chair will last many generations while still being fully functional for daily enjoyment.
