The Uncle Sam mechanical bank was made by the Shepard Hardware Co. of Buffalo, N.Y. in 1886.This bank has been in my family for over 120 years. When a coin is place between the thumb and four fingers then pushing down on the action lever , the lower jaw goes up closing his mouth, and the carpet bag springs open. When the lever is released the bag closes and the coin drops into the receptacle below.
