An Impressive George Hunzinger Mahogany Flip Top Yacht Game Table C. 1890’s.

This superb round gaming table has a mahogany veneered top which reverses to reveal a gaming table with a green baize surface, surrounded by wells for gaming pieces.

George Hunzinger was a furniture maker who emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1855. He manufactured uniquely designed furniture in New York City during the latter half of the 19th century. He patented his innovative designs. This gaming table is U.S. Patent No. 522014, granted on June 26, 1894.

• Mahogany Table top measures 40 1/2” in diameter. The top is composed of a richly veneered mahogany with a wonderful patina.

• The green baize gaming top measures 31” in diameter, surrounded by a 3” diameter well for gaming pieces.

• There are 2 spring-hinged compartments to securely hold gaming pieces when table is flipped to the mahogany side; one of the mahogany lids has a slot in the center for chips or coins. The compartments are 1 ¾” in depth.

• The table stands 29” high from the floor.

• The 4 legged base terminates in 3-toed paw feet.

• There is a mahogany veneered Saltier stretcher astride the center of the base. This stretcher has wonderful concave curves on all 4 sides. Veneer on stretcher top shows a wear or age imprint of the crossed leg supports beneath.

• The table top swivels on rods through 2 of the 4 leg top terminals.

• The other 2 leg top terminals have a metal spring-loaded catch mechanism which holds the table top in place and allows it to swivel when the catch is depressed.

• Each table leg terminal is adorned with a brass rosette.

• The legs are beautifully curved and composed of a richly patinated mahogany.

• All veneers are over less valuable woods; not particle board.

• The brass Hunzinger Name Plate, with the Patent Date of June 26, 1894, is affixed to the very bottom of the stretcher.

This is a fabulous table for those with limited space, as the table can double as a dining table, then be reversed to form a gaming table. This table was commonly used on yachts for its functionality. It would also be a great addition to any gaming room!

Condition – There is an approximately 5/8” blemish on the mahogany surface of the table top (see photo). It is small and not particularly noticeable. The top areas which rest on the brass spring mechanism when the table is reversed display some wear (see photos).

All items are sold "as is". This is an antique piece of furniture; small nicks and scratches are part of the beauty of an antique and are not described unless significant.
