Superb Edo Period c. 1860 Mokugyo wood fish zen sutra chanting drum. Used when the monks would do evening and morning chanting. The monks would beat the drum with the cadence of the sutra while chanting. The japanese characters 'kinryushi' are carved on the front, meaning golden dragon. The wood is lacquered in many layers of negoro lacquer with gold gilt. The top and bottom of both sides is worn from all the drum strikes. (H:42cm; W: 45cm) Ask for shipping quote.
